Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

In her long and strenuous journey, Senua attempts to retrieve her beloved Dillion’s soul from Helheim’s tortuous depths and Hela’s (the goddess of Norse’s underworld) grasp. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” is a dark and mysterious, action-packed game set in the era of the Vikings that utilizes Norse mythology to further the experience and complement the story of the game.

STORYLINE

As each player traverses Helheim, a man by the name of Zynbel, Senua’s father and a druid, speaks about her childhood. He talks about a necrotic curse that has infected Senua and her mother, Galena, and that the only way to dispel the evil was set fire to his wife. The element of Norse mythology inevitably engages players in this dark and twisted fantasy. As the story progresses, we learn from Zynbel that to gain access to the Norse underworld, Senua must defeat three keepers: Surtr, a fire giant who wields a fiery sword, Valravn, the god of illusions and finally, Garm, who uses the darkness of Helheim’s halls to stalk Senua. In the event of completion of all three tasks, the path to Norse’s underworld is unveiled.

The gameplay is unique because Senua is a product of depression and pent up guilt because she feels responsible for Dillion’s death, which leads to her psychosis; it causes her to have hallucinations and hear voices in her head. These voices guide players the entirety of the game, identifying clues and critical details that aid in Senua’s success. As players continue, particular challenges unfold that force them to utilize Senua’s psychosis. These puzzles require players to embrace Senua’s psychosis to find specific symbols to open doors, pathways, and hidden messages. Senua’s fighting methods and techniques are that of a warrior in the Viking period and compliment the game’s detail on a grand level, not to mention her “focus ability,” one of the most exquisite features of the game. Senua’s psychosis works closely in tandem with her focus ability, granting unprecedented power; it gives her the ability to slow time and reveal shadow-encompassed enemies. If utilized effectively and adequately, Senua becomes twice as lethal as before. Senua’s psychosis works closely in tandem with her focus ability, granting unprecedented power; it gives her the ability to slow time and reveal shadow-encompassed enemies. Unlike most games with a tutorial or trial to understand the controls/button layout, a characteristic that stood is how “Ninja Theory” purposefully chose not to include this feature. An otherworldly creature manifests and proceeds to attack you, the player. Because Ninja Theory didn’t add the tutorial feature, it allows players to immerse themselves more in-depth into the game thoroughly and intensify their experience of adrenaline while giving a sense of accomplishment, as most players are used to this trademark feature of video games.

What would a game be without its unique sound, right? This game truly goes the extra mile because of its incredible music working together with the gameplay to achieve a sensation experience. Every aspect of sound, effects, music, speech, and dialogue is a symphony of a well-conducted orchestra and honestly gives the game an attraction unlike any other.

There are no ways to describe the game without experiencing it yourself, so I sincerely encourage you to play it yourself. By now, “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” should be out on most platforms, and I highly advise you to play the game come time for the second release, “Hellblade 2”, coming holiday 2020.
